Good Writer, Better Writer

The last book I read was "Love Walked In" by Marisa De Los Santos. It's Carla's book, she recommended it to me.

It was a descent book. Made Carla cry. Didn't make me cry. Had a happy ending, but it was too neat. I like the happy ending, I just like them a bit messy.

The biggest thing that bugged me about this book was the author made all kinds of movie references. So the quantity of the references bugged me, but she also just beat you over the head with them. I don't have the book anymore, but they all went something like this:

It was like in the movie (insert a movie)when(insert actor or actress)played the (insert character)in the scene when (insert action).

Then she proceeds to explain how that movie scene relates to the story.

Just beat me over the head!

Anywho, so now I'm reading "A Spot of Bother" by Mark Haddon.

Ahhhh....

He makes a movie reference and it's like butta.

One of the main characters is talking to his friend about his sister who is getting married to a guy she doesn't love. A marriage of convenience. So they're discussing how the brother doesn't like it one bit but can't really do anything about it cuz she's a grown-up and can make her own decisions.

The friends says, "This is her life, Jamie. You can't fight off Anne Bancroft with a crucifix and drag her onto the nearest bus."

Bloody brilliant!
