The $64 Rhubarb

Well, I'm back at school now. No actual kids yet. They come on Monday and even then it's only for testing. Tuesday morning they'll show up bright and squirrelly in my classroom.

So summer has come to a screeching halt. I sure have enjoyed my summer off. We had some really hot dry weather and now it's very wet and cool. My garden mostly seems to enjoy the cool wet weather. Some of the potted flowers are drowning. But my rhubarb is big enough for the first time ever to actually harvest some.

Speaking of gardens, I'm ending off my summer reading with a great book about gardening called "The $64 Tomato: How One Man Nearly Lost His Sanity, Spent A Fortune, And Endured An Existential Crisis In The Quest For The Perfect Garden" by William Alexander.

I'm not quite done with it, but it's a great, great book. You don't have to be a gardener to enjoy it. If you've ever been obsessed about something, addicted to something, can't wait to get home from work for something...you'll appreciate this book. And it's very funny. I love funny books.

The author suffered a back injury and was basically told to stop gardening and he ponders what that means to him at a relatively young age. I sometimes think about not being able to enjoy that activity either from injury or old age. I don't like it. Not one little bit.

You can see the garden in "The $64 Tomato" here.

That's pretty much the garden of my dreams.
